Angelina Jolie , 37, underwent a double preventive mastectomy, after her doctors said she had an 87% risk of breast cancer and 50% of developing ovarian cancer.
In a letter published by The New York Times titled "My Medical Choice ", the actress explains that her mother fought against the neoplasia for a decade and died at age 56, so she carries a" defective "gene called BRCA1, which increases the likelihood of both types of cancer.
Although the risk of developing the neoplasm is different in the case of each woman, only a part of the breast cancer is generated by a hereditary genetic mutation, that is, people with the BRCA gene have 65% of it, on average.
Given this, Angelina Jolie details that she made the decision to practice double preventive mastectomy to minimize the risk of developing this disease, as explained in the following video of CadenaTres:
She points out that on April 27, she completed three months of treatment recommended by the mastectomy, during which time she kept the decision private and continued with her normal duties.
Angelina Jolie says that after nine weeks of the operation, a final surgery is performed to reconstruct the breasts with an implant. "My chances of developing breast cancer were reduced from 87% to less than 5%," he says.
The actress shares her experience to show that through a blood test can be detected in time if it is highly susceptible to developing breast or ovarian cancer.
According to National Cancer Institute of the United States Preventive mastectomy is the surgical removal of one or both breasts to reduce the risk of developing breast cancer by up to 90%.
The institute ensures that women who undergo this type of surgery should talk with their specialist about the risk of suffering from neoplasia and possible complications, but when is it advisable to do so?
After the preventive mastectomy, a breast reconstruction can be performed to restore its shape. Remember that self-exploration is essential to detect breast cancer early; go with your doctor before any physical or internal alteration that you detect in the breasts. Beware!
