Prenatal test detects Down syndrome

Magazine American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology published that a prenatal blood test has been developed to detect the Down's Syndrome . This sample is an option for women who want to know if their child at birth will have this condition.

Some years ago, the only tests to determine if the fetus had Down's Syndrome they were the amniocentesis or a sample of villus corionico , invasive procedures that increase the risk of losing the baby.

The following video explains what is the Down's Syndrome and its causes:

This new test can also detect genetic disorders such as Edwars syndrome , which causes serious birth defects and in many cases is lethal.

The test detected 44 cases of the two disorders in 167 prenatal blood samples. In another study of University of London and University College London , correctly detected all cases of Down's Syndrome and 98% of the cases of Edwards syndrome .

The cost of the new test is economical with the price of the studies that are currently carried out to detect these disorders. However, now the scientists' dilemma is that many times when it is diagnosed in the fetus Down's Syndrome , the woman decides to interrupt the pregnancy . In front of it the specialists ask themselves: will begin to disappear little by little the babies with Down's Syndrome ? What do you think?
