The PRD proposes a law to decrease the high rates of obesity in Mexico, through the regulation of junk food and a constant practice of sports in the country's schools.

The senator of the Party of the Democratic Revolution, Lázaro Mazón Alonso, proposed a challenge to the health and education institutions to undertake a deep and aggressive legislation to combat the obesity , a disease that has become a public health problem.

The proposal proposes the creation of the Intersectorial Commission of Food and Nutritional Security (Cisan), whose president will be the head of the Federal Health Secretariat, José Ángel Córdova Villalobos, who will become the highest authority to apply the programs and plans for the prevention and eradication of Obesity in the country.

The role of schools

In the educational field, this proposal aims to directly regulate the food advertising industry "Scrap and carbonated drinks" , and new criteria are also established in the labeling.

Restrictions on advertising to children are also foreseen and the consumption of healthy foods (fruits, vegetables and cereals) in school canteens is promoted, as well as sanctions and jail sentences for those who violate these provisions.

The senator of the PRD said that the sale of foods with a high content of saturated fatty acids and sugars will not be allowed, either in vending machines, in stores and in the places commonly called 'cooperatives', because they contain a high caloric index and very few nutritional benefits.
