The empty nest syndrome is a phenomenon in which parents experience feelings of sadness and loss when the last child leaves home. Although actively encouraged to become independent, the experience can be painful, so, how to overcome the syndrome of the empty nest?

It is possible that by losing the daily life of your children and the constant company, you worry intensely about their safety and wonder if they will be able to take good care of themselves.

If you are experiencing feelings of loss due to empty nest syndrome, take the following steps.

 

  1. Accept the synchronization. Avoid comparing your child's calendar with your own personal experience. Instead, focus on what you can do to help your child succeed.
  2. Stay in contact. You can stay close to your children, even when you live apart. Make an effort to maintain a regular contact through visits, phone calls, emails, texts or video chats.
  3. Seek support. Find refuge in your loved ones and other close support contacts. Share your feelings If you feel depressed, consult a doctor or mental health professional.
  4. Keep a positive attitude. Think of the time and extra energy you can have to dedicate yourself to your marriage or personal interests.
