New contraceptive option

The Mexican Foundation for Family Planning ensures that emergency contraception represent the last chance to avoid pregnancies not planned, which in Mexico occurs in six out of 10 adolescents.

In an interview for GetQoralHealth , Juan Carlos López Jurado , gynecologist certified and recertified by the Mexican Council of Gynecology and Obstetrics , explains that the emergency contraception in the country it is a method of family planning that is used in the manner of "urgency ", When you have a relationship without protection or when a method failed.

The specialist emphasizes that there are two types of family planning methods that should not be confused.

The anticonceptive pill conventional is a regular method that consists of a daily intake before the period of menstruation and after this the treatment is started again. They usually contain estrogen Y progesterone .

On the other hand, anticonceptive pill of emergency or the next day, which are exactly the same, are used to avoid a pregnancy unplanned. They are indicated after having unprotected sex or when a conventional method fails.

New contraceptive option

Today women have an alternative to prevent a pregnancy , Its about ulipristal acetate , a morning-after pill that since 2009 was approved in Europe and in 2011 in the United States. This year is about to be launched in Mexico.

This new method of contraception is three times more effective than Levonorgestrel It reduces the risk of unwanted pregnancy by up to 0.9% and can take up to 120 hours (five days) after an unprotected sexual intercourse.

López Jurado warns that, in the case of emergency pill , the best results will be obtained during the first 24 hours, regardless of what method is used.

With the arrival of this new pill , Mexico will have a complete scheme of next day pills : Yuzpe method , Levonorgestrel and now the Ulipristal Acetate .

Safe protection

Women in fertile age who have started an active sex life can consume this pill and take it once a month in case of having unprotected sex or when the method used has failed.

If a woman takes five to six pills in a cycle, it will probably have a load hormonal that will generate alterations in your menstrual period , I do not think it will happen to seniors, he said López Jurado .

In this regard, he suggests that what is stipulated is to use it for what it is: an emergency.

Contraceptive pills are not abortive, inhibit or delay ovulation

Like any medicine , theulipristal acetate , has minimal side effects, including headache , sickness or upset stomach

The important thing is to remember that there is no medicine infallible, all can fail, especially if they are not taken properly and in the doses indicated.

In case of having a sexual relationship without protection, the recommendation is to look for help of a professional of health to request guidance about the best contraceptive method
