Neuro-psychiatric disorders, current health challenge

The award Nobel Prize in Medicine 2013, Thomas Südhof, explains how synapses are made in the brain and why it is important for the brain to function quickly.

"The brain makes us who we are, but it is an enigma that we do not understand, that is, we still do not know 100% how it works," says Thomas Südhof, 2013 Nobel Prize in Medicine.

Within the framework of XVII International Congress Advances in Medicine 2015 , organized by the Hospital Civil de Guadalajara, details that to find a cure for neuro-psychiatric disorders, one must know the microcircuits and the communication between neurons (synapses).

Neuro-psychiatric disorders, current health challenge

These health problems, among which stress depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and autism, affect millions of people in the world and there is no effective treatment.

This is because the complexity of brain it's bigger than the human genome, "says Thomas Südhof.

"The synapse is the key to understanding the brain. Any change in the synapse, however small, represents many changes in the behavior of people. "

Therefore, beyond knowing the genes that predispose to these disorders, we must understand how they relate to the brain and its microcircuits, to find effective therapies that improve the quality of life of patients, concludes Thomas Südhof.
