First, pain is an adjustment that protects us from wounds . It also serves as an indirect aid in repairing and replacing damaged tissue. But the most important function of pain is to inform the person that something in the body is wrong.

Of the different types of narcotics, morphine is the most used for pain relief . The other two included in this group are codeine (known to be less potent than morphine and heroin (the chemical modification of morphine). Morphine and heroin are recognized as two of the most commonly abused drugs.

The narcotics they have undesired characteristics, for example, they produce drowsiness which makes driving a very dangerous car when being medicated. Narcotics are also known to develop tolerance, the danger here is that higher doses are needed to produce the same effect.

Addiction to narcotics can cause other unpleasant effects such as constipation, itching, nausea and vomiting. The addict can also develop urticaria probably due to an allergic reaction or the chemical effect of the drug.

That is why it is important for a doctor to supervise the use of narcotic drugs for pain relief, for all the dangers associated with addiction explained above. It is also important to understand that narcotic drugs tend to depress the reflexes that make a person breathe. This is the usual cause of death in overdose of narcotics.
