More than 300 thousand people suffer from total deafness

Cases of deafness in the country, surpass those of cerebral palsy Y Down's Syndrome . There are about 6 thousand births per year of children with hearing impairments of different degrees, revealed José Ángel Córdova Villalobos , secretary of public health .

In relation to the causes of deafness at birth , both in Mexico and in the rest of the world, there are data that coincide in that the congenital diseases , infectious Y traumatic , could be due to the consumption of drug ingested by mothers, due to obstetric complications in childbirth and the misuse of certain antibiotics (ototoxic), which affect the ear.

According to the Dr. Olivia Avila , otorhinolaryngologist and general director of the Mexican Association for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Deafness , there are people who daily are exposed to noisy environments due to work issues. It is estimated that 55% of them will lose hearing in different degrees, and may even reach total deafness. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), currently auditory alterations they occupy fourth place in occupational diseases.

In this sense, the problem of hearing loss is not exclusive to the workplace, experts warn that it is a complication also produced by bad hearing habits , that is, by listening to music at a very high volume through headphones, in bars, discos and in cars. This factor is the main cause of hearing loss (hearing loss ), in young people.

Prevent is the key

The basis of auditory health is undoubtedly prevention. However, there are people who were born with some alteration or for different reasons their hearing was affected: "To guarantee the hearing health It is necessary to go at least once a year with the otolaryngologist , who will perform a complete examination and, if necessary, refer the audiologist, to perform the necessary studies to measure the hearing (audiometry) and thus jointly establish an effective treatment, "explains the specialist.

Recent studies have revealed that people who suffer from deafness or hearing loss They can present emotional problems such as inhibition, isolation and low self-esteem, given that from a social perspective, this group of people are ignored or marginalized by appearing before others as distracted, indifferent, apathetic, clumsy or serious.

Therefore, Ávila invites people who detect a hearing problem to contact the Mexican Association for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Deafness, which is a non-profit, nongovernmental civil association created for support in the early diagnosis process, timely and effective treatment of the various types of deafness .
