Menstruation the coconut of women

Every 28 days , millions of women in the world experience ambivalent sensations: the same goes from pain to crying or bad mood, in less than 5 minutes. And we owe everything to the famous rule or menstrual period that is nothing else than the monthly bleeding of women and that affects us during a long journey of life.

Menstruation is part of the cycle that helps the woman's body prepare every month for an eventual pregnancy. On average, the menstrual cycle lasts 28 days , although there are cases where it can be from 23 to 35 days. Menstrual blood flows from the uterus, through the small opening of the cervix and out through the vagina carrying a good amount of tissue from inside the womb.

The rule can last from 3 to 5 days and, in general, never comes alone: almost always accompanied by premenstrual syndrome, that is, mood swings, abdominal and breast swelling, emotional ups and downs, fluid retention, pain, physical decay and gastrointestinal disorders, among other niceties .

What happens during the menstrual cycle

The rule is not a mere whim of nature nor a divine punishment. It is a much more complex process that involves many parts of the body, such as the brain, the pituitary gland, the uterus and cervix, the ovaries, the fallopian tubes and the vagina.

Hormones, which are the body's chemical agents, rise and fall during the month and cause the menstrual cycle. The ovaries generate two important female hormones: estrogen and progesterone, although two other hormones generated by the pituitary gland also intervene in the menstrual cycle: follicle-stimulating (FSH) and luteinizing (LH).

Two types of menstruation

According to specialists from the Mexican Institute of Social Security, there are two types of menstruation:

1.Dysmenorrhea , is a menstrual condition characterized by severe and frequent menstrual cramps, and pain associated with menstruation.

It can be primary (occurs from the beginning and usually for life, menstrual cramps are caused by severe and abnormal uterine contractions) and secondary (as a result of a physical problem, painful menstrual periods are caused by another condition that is present in the body, for example, endometriosis).

2.Amenorrhea , is the absence of menstrual flow and may be primary (menstrual cycles did not start before 16 years of age) or secondary (menstrual cycles begin at an appropriate age, but then cease for 6 months or more, without presented normal causes such as pregnancy, lactation or menopause).
