Maternal deaths in Mexico decreased in 2010

During the year 2010, 49.8 were registered in Mexico maternal deaths for every 100 thousand births, a figure that is intended to be gradually reduced in the next few years, according to the Secretary of Health, José Ángeles Córdova Villalobos, in a protest event of the Citizen Observatory of Maternal Mortality in Nuevo León.

The official warned that to reach the goal committed by Mexico of 22.5 deaths per thousand live births, it is necessary to accelerate the pace, to avoid on average seven deaths per year in the next three years.

The secretary acknowledged that maternal mortality is an example that in our country there are still gaps and differences, because there are places that register more than 100 deaths per 100 thousand live births and in others only 10 or 12.

Córdova villalobos stressed that work is being done to decrease this mortality rate unfair, in which a woman loses her life to give another, which becomes a priority since the right to life is a fundamental human right.

To this end, the Healthy Pregnancy program was created with a prenatal follow-up, and the Obstetric Emergency program through which all pregnant women with a serious problem can be treated at any medical unit, and universal health coverage is accelerated.

An important challenge

Córdova Villalobos commented that there are important challenges in this area such as the promotion of education among women and greater sensitivity on the part of medical personnel to reduce the number of cesarean sections, which is a risk of maternal mortality.

This problem, he said, is strictly related to the educational level, since more education, fewer deaths of this type.

But in this task, he stressed, it is important that there are external observers to point out the errors and offer alternatives to correct them, and in this way the processes are transparent.
