Marijuana vs retinitis pigmentosa

How willing are you to use a drug to cure a disease? One study highlights the use of marijuana in health, especially to prevent blindness.

According to the research, published in the magazine Experimental Eye Research , this plant is capable of preventing blindness in patients with retinitis pigmentosa, which is one of the most common eye diseases in Mexico.

The researchers of the UUniversity of Alicante, Spain a, point out that there is a therapy with marijuana that decreases the destruction of light sensors in the eyes.

"The active chemicals in marijuana, known as cabbabinoids, are useful for delaying the degeneration of the retina," the authors say.

However, the researchers detail that more studies are still needed to identify how marijuana prevents blindness.

 

What is retinitis pigmentosa?

According to the INational Institutes of Health of the United States , this disease damages the retina, which can be hereditary. Symptoms occur in childhood, which are: decreased night vision, loss of peripheral or central vision.
