Lupus affects women of reproductive age

This autoimmune disease affects more than one million Mexicans, especially women of reproductive age due to the high estrogen load generated at that stage, says rheumatologist, Leonor Adriana Barile Fabris.

The specialist of the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS) points out that because it is an autoimmune disease, the body's defense system works against itself and attacks it.

It is very common that lupus occurs in women between 15 and 40 years, due to the hormonal changes experienced during adolescence, pregnancy, menstrual periods and menopause. The most common symptoms are:

  1. Fatigue
  2. Difficulty doing daily activities
  3. waste of weight
  4. Fever
  5. Fall from hair
  6. Redness on the sides of the face (they look like the wings of a butterfly
  7. Pain e inflammation of the joints


Although it is normal to occur in women of reproductive age, there are some factors such as the environment, constant exposure to ultraviolet rays and genetics, which influence to trigger the disease.

The expert assures that until now the causes that trigger the lupus , so it is necessary that the relatives of a patient with this condition have a medical surveillance and avoid the factors that detonate it.

Women of reproductive age who have the condition can be controlled through a personalized treatment that includes drugs, steroids or immunosuppressants, which will help them recover 75% of their quality of life and prevent damage to the skin, joints, blood, kidneys, brain and lungs.
