Leonora Carrington dies at 94 years old victim of pneumonia

Leonora Carrington , one of the most representative artists of the twentieth century, died in the early hours of this Thursday, May 26, 2011 in Mexico City, just over a month after turning 94 years of age. Painter, sculptor, engraver, writer, playwright and set designer, Carrington was considered the last surreal live in Mexico

 


 

He was born on April 6, 1917 in the town of Chorley , in Lancashire , England and emigrated to Mexico in 1942 with her then husband, the writer Renato Leduc , who would divorce a few years later; Nonetheless, Leonora Carrington she does not return to her country of origin, in love with Mexico, she decides to stay and adopt this homeland as her own. He took root and befriended several of the artistic icons of his time, such as Remedios Varo, André Breton , Benjamin Péret , refugee artists in Mexico with whom he shared his surrealist tendency.

 

Victim of pneumonia, a disease of the respiratory tract that, at his advanced age and his fragile state of health, gradually led to his death.

 


 

With her death she leaves a void in the hearts of those who knew her and of those who saw in her work the wonderful magic of surrealist art expressed through its strokes and its verses, and that now cry for its absence. Carrigton leaves behind an artistic heritage that will hardly be forgotten by his followers, friends and, why not say it ?, his detractors. Rest in peace, Leonora Carrington !
