Lack of affection: origin of many diseases

The emergence of "new diseases" makes the scientific community reflect on the possibility that the affective deficit be one of the causes. Although it is known how to alleviate the symptoms and even eliminate diseases such as cancer, heart attack, allergy, depression or obesity, doctors still do not know the origin of many of these diseases.

The main victims: girls and boys

Once it has been demonstrated that affective insufficiency is directly associated with the development of certain diseases and disorders, it is known that one of the groups most at risk is children, especially those who do not receive the necessary affection daily to have harmony.

"Affective lack influences the quality of the child's defense mechanisms against infection. The immune system (organic defenses) does not respond the same in a child with this history than in one who lives in normal conditions, "says Dr. Antonio Muñoz, pediatrician at the Xanit International Hospital in Malaga, Spain.

Growth retardation is a pathology frequently associated with affective deprivation, due to an inhibition of the pituitary-adrenal system, which in extreme cases can prevent the adequate production of certain hormones, resulting in children with a smaller size than normal.

The presence of infections is also more frequent, as well as behavior disorders. According to Dr. Muñoz, children "may be subjected to chronic stress or psychological and emotional stress, which impairs their type of immune response."

The healing power of a caress

For Álex Rovira Celma, specialist in neurolinguistic programming and transactional analysis, "the person needs contact with others through affection, tenderness, caress, look, word or gesture, to grow, develop and survive".

According to the expert, positive or negative stimuli are determining factors in our evolution as people, and the work of numerous psychologists has shown that the lack of caresses can cause a delay in the baby's psychological development and a physical degeneration that leads to death despite having the necessary food and hygiene to survive.
