It's better to be safe than sorry

Getting sick is always expensive and medical care is not always the best or the most accessible. A consultation with a private specialist doctor ranges between 500 and 1,000 pesos and the majority of the population can not invest a sum like this, even when it comes to their health.

Even more so when it comes to medical attention to diseases such as diabetes or the Cancer , whose complications are prolonged and its treatment, complicated.

To solve this problem in the country, it is necessary to build a comprehensive health system of high quality for the entire population, capable of responding to the diseases and mortality of the 21st century.

In the past, a high percentage of the population died of communicable diseases, such as malaria or the measles . Today the population is mostly affected by chronic ills; diabetes became the leading cause of death in Mexico, followed by cardiovascular diseases and the Cancer .

Our health system has not reacted in the right way, says Malaquías López Cervantes, academic of the Faculty of Medicine of the UNAM . We continue to bet on hospitals, highly technical medicine, specialism, which is extremely expensive. We must bet on prevention, to keep people healthy or treat them very early, he adds.

It's better to be safe than sorry

The concept of health is multifactorial, since it involves aspects beyond the task and medical attention. "Health is a social production. It has to do with what we do on a daily basis, and, of course, the decisions of governments on the matter, "he says. Malaquías López, promoter of the Sectoral Fund for Health Research .

For example, changes in the diet of Mexicans are related to the obesity and the diabetes . However, one of the most important discoveries of science, in the battle against diseases, is that you do not have to wait for a person to express a serious condition to seek medical attention.

"On the contrary, we have possibilities to identify the disease at very early stages, detect health risk factors and combat them directly. It is necessary to promote a public health system that gives priority to preventive medicine and that depends to a minimum on highly specialized medicine. The specialism is very expensive. "

Article IV of our Constitution mentions the right to health care as a Universal Right. However, article 123 establishes that they have the right to medical care offered by institutions such as Social Security, who have a paid job and are registered as workers of a company. So, health is a labor law or a universal right ?, questioned the surgeon.

Malaquías López Cervantes defends a model that guarantees everyone the right to health, with full access to the treatments offered by scientific and technological advances.
