IPN prepares chocolates for people with diabetes

Students of the National Polytechnic Institute (IPN) developed a chocolate without sugar , added with a natural sweetener called Stevia Rebaudiana, plant that in addition to its recognized action antidiabetic , it's rich in polyphenols (chemicals rich in vitamin P) and compounds flavonoids , which contain properties anticancer and help reduce the risk of heart disease.

Raúl Sánchez Sánchez and Irvin Alfonso Silva Lemus , students of the National School of Biological Science (ENCB) of the IPN, and creators of this candy which they named: "Choco Rico " , they explained that some sweeteners can be harmful to the gastric health because they cause diarrhea and stomach spasms.

In this regard, Silva Lemus said: "The sweeteners as the saccharin , sucralose or aspartame are the most suitable for people with diabetes , but they should be taken with caution. That's why we decided to sweeten this chocolate with Stevia Rebaudiana”.

He added that this natural sweetener comes from a plant in the tropical zone of South America that contains glycosides with a sweet taste that does not provide calories. The products used commercially are the steviosides , which provide the sweet taste: "The stevioside It is not artificial, it is a totally natural extract from the dry leaf of this plant, and it is estimated to be 350 times sweeter than sugar, "added Silva.

The power of Stevia

This plant is recognized for its action antidiabetic , so it is also considered antacid , oral antibacterial , digestive Y diuretic , since it improves the metabolism.

On the other hand, Raúl Sánchez , student of the IPN commented that his product, called "Choco Rico " , thanks to its content theobromine , you can increase the levels of antioxidants in the blood, improve digestion and bowel movement. It also contains other beneficial flavonoids for blood circulation, essential in the functioning of vital organs such as the heart and brain:
