Intrauterine device for adolescents

The intrauterine device is a contraceptive method that consists of insert a small device inside the woman's uterus. According to the Mexican Social Security Institute, the T-shaped device measures approximately 3.1 cm x 3.6 cm. Its effectiveness rate is greater than 98% during a period of prolonged use of 10 years. Per year, the effectiveness rate rises to less than one pregnancy for every 100 women who use it.

There are different types of IUD, medicated intrauterine devices and inert or non-medicated intrauterine devices. Some are made of polyethylene with copper coils. There are several types of IUDs, depending on the population niche. Medicated IUDs are indicated for young women in fertile age and nulliparous, that is, young women without children.

The small device acts by releasing copper or a steroid of progestational activity, which causes changes in the endometrium and blocks the passage of sperm. It increases the level of white blood cells of the endometrium and causes an inflammatory reaction (sterile) where the copper ions weaken the sperm and changes are made in the movement of the uterine tubes.

In Mexico's Reproductive Health and Family Planning Program, only copper-medicated IUDs are used because they are considered highly effective and because they are widely available.

Remember that you must go with highly trained personnel in the various techniques of insertion of IUD , since some of the possible complications after the procedure occur due to the poor placement of the device.
