Internet helps prevent addictions

According to the Ministry of Health (SSA) in Mexico, drug use increased from 21.5% to 24.4% in the period from 2009 to 2012.

Young people are the population with the highest risk to consume drugs such as alcohol, marijuana or tobacco. The National Survey of Addictions 2011 , notes that more than 9% of people between 12 and 65 years of age consume 5 or more alcoholic drinks a week and about 30% smoke.

According to the General Directorate for the Dissemination of Science, Researchers of the Faculty of Psychology of the National Autonomous University of Mexico, (UNAM) they created the Digital Space for the Prevention of Addictions .

With the aim of informing young people between 15 and 22 years old about the different drugs of abuse, answering questions and analyzing different strategies that allow them to avoid or reduce the use of drugs.

Digital Space for the Prevention of Addictions provides information and supports the user so that he learns prevention skills to face risk situations that he faces every day; He also informs him of available treatments and places where he can receive help and psychological attention.

"We seek that the subjects not only find information, but right there they can find the alternatives to solve their problem," said psychologist Lorena Flores Plata, who participated in the design of this portal.

This project consists of three stages: The first includes the integration of information about the different drugs of abuse: what they are, their consequences in physiological terms and the short and long term effects on the body.

In this part users can make an assessment of their consumption and in real time, and confidentially have a clear idea about whether their consumption is risky.

In addition, this site offers them the opportunity to rehearse and learn life skills that can be social, cognitive and for the control of emotions, information accompanied by videos.

In the social, negotiation, assertiveness, cooperation, communication and rejection can work. In the cognitive are involved decision making and the influence of the media. And in the control of emotions they support them against stress.

The second stage consists of an exchange of information between users and a prevention specialist. And in the last stage, the user who has the information can be a source of knowledge for their online peers.

This digital site, pioneer in the prevention of addictions, intends to take the information to mobile devices. In addition, he hopes that users can discuss their views on drugs, explore alternative lifestyles and support each other through personal experiences.
