Instagram and Facebook can cause depression

Spending time on social networks can lead to negative feelings, such as depression , envy, frustration and isolation; in particular, on Instagram, above Facebook, according to a joint study conducted by the Humboldt University of Berlin and the Technical University of Darmstadt.

In this sense, according to the researchers of the Human-Computer Institute at Carnegie Mellon , people who communicate infrequently in social networks, but who read the messages or status of their friends and look at their images, tend to be less satisfied with their own lives, which can lead to depression .

"If the hours you spend on Facebook you invest in seeing status and photos of others (especially vacation photos), then science confirms that you have entered into a semi-consensual sadomasochistic relationship with Facebook and you need to break the cycle," he explains. Hanna Krasnova, co-author of the study "Facebook and envy".

On Instagram "you have more explicit and implicit cues from people being happy, rich and successful than in a status update," says Hanna Krasnova. "A photo can be powerful by provoking immediate social comparisons, and it can trigger feelings of inferiority."

After monitoring a group of users of social networks, the specialist observed that holidays or leisure activities of others, were those that caused a greater feeling of envy; followed by social interactions, such as seeing that a friend made more virtual wishes of the happy birthday that one had received for his own birthday.

What happens in social networks is different from what happens in face-to-face relationships, where envy is fueled by the success, talent and possessions of others.

However, these feelings were present in more than 30% of the people who participated in the study, for which, the specialists exhort so much to have certain care when choosing their "friends" and what photos they share in social networks, as well as privilege relationships in a real environment.
