Injectable drugs spread HIV / AIDS infection

The main transmission route of the human immunodeficiency virus in our country, it is through the sexual intercourse and until a few years ago, cases associated with injecting drug users were relatively few. However, the number has been increasing and by the year 2003 it already represented 1.5% of cases at the national level according to data from the National Council against Addictions.

In many countries, the annual number of new HIV infections has decreased and the prevalence of HIV among young people has declined according to data from the UNAIDS, 2008, thanks in large part to international efforts to cover prevention services around the world

However, the Addiction Surveys and other investigations conducted periodically in Mexico indicate that the use of injected drugs such as heroin and cocaine it has increased, which possibly means that there is also an increased risk in the spread of the virus in this way.

Although the highest percentage of infections in Latin America the men have it , who have sex with men, according to recent publications of the World Health Organization, it should be noted that injecting drug users, sex workers and their clients carry a relevant burden in the transmission of HIV.

Injecting illicit drug use exposes consumers to a variety of acute and chronic health problems and it should not be forgotten that these groups maintain links with other social groups of non-users of injectable drugs that also they may be affected in case of having unprotected sex.
