Increasing infarcts among young people

The heart attacks in young adults and middle-aged adults are on the increase, while the number among older adults has been reduced, which could be a sign that the obesity has begun to change the average age of the condition.

The most significant increase is 51% , which happened among men between 15 and 34 years of age. The infarcts arose among women of this same group, but not so fast, in 17%.

The numbers were released at a conference of the American Stroke Association, from a longitudinal study nationwide in the United States, about hospitalizations by age. The year 1994 was compared to the year 2006.

The Dr. Ralph Sacco , president of the American Heart Association, and neurologist at the University of Miami noted that "it is definitely alarming" the situation. "We have already worried about how the increase in prevalence of obesity in children and young adults can take its toll on cardiovascular diseases and strokes, "which seems to be happening, he said.

A preliminary study was also presented at the conference where there is concern that the diet soda contribute to risk of heart attack . The researchers found that people who consume diet soda every day increases in 48% its risk of suffer a heart attack, compared to people who do not take it.
