IMSS increases organ transplantation

The Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) registered a progressive growth in its Institutional Program of Donation and Transplantation of Organs, Tissues and Cells, with thousand 892 procedures performed during 2010, to improve the quality of life of patients with renal, ophthalmological, hematological, cardiac and hepatic problems . In this regard, the doctor Ignacio Guerra Gallo , Head of Innovation in Transplants of the Division of Donation and Transplants of Organs, Tissues and Cells, of the Coordination of Medical Units of High Specialty of the IMSS, indicated that in 2010 there were thousand 268 kidney transplants, 419 of cornea, 163 of bone marrow, 16 of heart, 25 of liver and 1 of pancreas in the Hospital Medical Units of the Social Security with programs of transplant . Gallo War, said that although there is a positive balance in the last three years in this matter, the growth is around 5%, which allows the IMSS to improve the quality of life of beneficiaries with chronic degenerative diseases and, in some cases, cases, with terminal diseases. The IMSS specialist explained that kidney transplantation is the most demanded in Social Security, with 1,268 procedures performed in 2010; that is, it grew by 5.2% compared to 2009, the year in which 205 thousand transplants were performed in this body. With respect to cornea transplant , the specialist said that in 2010 there were 419 procedures that, compared to 413 in 2009, represent an increase of 1.4%; while bone marrow were 163 transplants, a growth of 32.5%, compared to 123 made in 2009.
