Previous studies revealed that the cause of the appearance of gray hair was the lack of melanin (a protein that determines the color of hair, skin and eyes). However, until now they did not know what caused it to lower its level. Scientists from the University College of London (United Kingdom), identified that the reason why gray hair appears before time is a gene that causes the decrease of melanin level and hair graying.

The researchers analyzed the DNA of 6,000 individuals in Latin America, including Brazil, Colombia, Chile, Mexico and Peru, to locate the genes that determine hair color, density and texture.
