Human Rights monitors respect for people with disabilities

The Government of Mexico designated the National Human Rights Commission (CNDH) and 32 public protection and defense of human rights in all the states of the country, as mechanisms responsible for supervising the application of the Convention on the Human Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

Patricia Espinosa (Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mexico) explained that one or several independent monitoring mechanisms will be chosen as part of the obligations established by the framework responsible for the promotion, protection and supervision of the application of the Convention.

The ombudsman of the CNDH may follow up on international commitments, as well as the civil society and, in particular, people with disability and the organizations that represent them, will participate in the monitoring process .

The office in Mexico of the High Commissioner of the United Nations Organization (UN ) for Human Rights has proposed a specific study on how to designate an observer.

During the event, Espinosa urged the Senate to approve the General Law for the Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities , which has been in committees since December 2010. He stressed that the voice of people with disabilities and civil society organizations in the mechanisms that are designated today will be fundamental for compliance with the Convention.

Javier Quijando, President of the Mexican Confederation of Organizations in favor of People with Intellectual Disability (CONFE), expressed that civil society should be taken into account for the integration of commissions, due to the lack of coordination that exists to apply laws that defend and recognize the human dignity, Specially in People with disabilities .
