How to detect the problem?

There are brain areas related to mathematical learning that, when damaged, prevent a person from performing any mathematical calculation. This disorder is known as dyscalculia, which is the difficulty to perform calculation operations.

Those who suffer from this disorder have difficulty performing numerical skills, identifying numbers or understanding quantities, for example, what is bigger or smaller, what number goes first and what goes next, as well as doing sums from right to left or from top to bottom.

The cerebral structures involved in mathematical skills are the intraparietal groove, located in the parietal cortex; the visual cortex; the prefrontal cortex, the cerebellum and the hippocampus.

Dr. Maura Jazmín Ramírez Flores, from the School of Psychology of the UNAM, explained that there is acquired dyscalculia and development. The first occurs as a result of a brain injury and can appear at any age.

The dyscalculia of development arises from childhood and begins when children enter preschool and begin to work with numerical operations.
