How to deal with a broken bone

Fractures are breaks in the bones that require immediate medical attention, regardless of whether the fracture is as thin as a hairline or the bone is completely broken.

Fractures must be taken care of correctly. If not dealt with immediately they can lead to total disability or even death. The good thing is that human bones have the ability to heal completely, with proper treatment. First aid plays an important role in the recovery of the patient. It is therefore important to know how to apply first aid to a person with a fractured bone.

How to determine if the bone is broken?

An important aspect in first aid is the evaluation of the damage. Here are some of the signs of a bone fracture:

1. Pain

2. Inflammation

3. Deformity or misalignment in the injured part

4. Bleeding

5. Difficulty moving the injured part

6. When the bone moves through the skin

First aid

Once you have confirmed that the victim suffered a bone fracture, the first thing is to immobilize the injured area. Never try to realign the bone. Unless they receive training and help is available, let the professionals do the splint.

In case of bleeding, apply pressure - but not too much - on the wound with a sterile bandage. A broken bone is quite painful, make sure the victim is as calm and relaxed as possible. Ask him to apply pressure on the wound until it is completely clotted. Do not periodically check if the bleeding stopped, as it can damage the fresh clot and cause it to bleed again.

Apply cold compresses or ice directly on the skin.

Never leave the person alone. Check your vital signs regularly. Check the pulse and breathing. If necessary, perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

Keep the victim warm, lying down and quiet until help arrives.

Never try to give him food or liquids.

Once emergency help arrives, inform the doctors of the cause of the injury and first aid procedures you have performed. Call the relatives of the victim.
