Habits that increase low vision risk

Due to a high prevalence of diabetes among the Mexican population, the Diabetic retinopathy has become the main cause of low vision among adults, mainly over 50 years, so it is essential to perform frequent ophthalmological reviews.

In an interview with GetQoralHealth, Dr. Mildred Fromow, president of the Mexican Center for Low Vision , explains that low vision is not synonymous with blindness , but it is a range of vision that, if not attended to in time, can incapacitate a person to perform their daily activities.

Habits that increase low vision risk

Low vision is a degree of visual impairment that can affect anyone without respecting their gender or age. "It can be detected more frequently among older adults, due to the loss of their visual abilities, however it can also occur even in newborns," explains the specialist.

Mildred Fromow explains that low vision may be a consequence of some disease, such as Diabetic retinopathy , waterfalls, macular degeneration related to age , in adults, and in the case of minors, the main causes refer to refractive errors, such as myopia and the inappropriate use of lenses.

In addition to the above conditions, there are some habits that can increase the risk of low vision, such as:

1. Smoking Smoking can be an agent that affects visual quality in the long term, as well as being related to different conditions.

2. Food poor in nutrients beneficial for vision, such as antioxidants, carotene or lutein, present in vegetables, green vegetables and cold water fish.

3. Inadequate hygiene . The use of home remedies or "recommended drops" should be avoided without real knowledge of their effects on visual health, such as the use of chamomile infusions for lubrication because it may be astringent during washing.

4. Self-medication . The management of certain medications, such as those that contain steroids, may increase the risk of some conditions such as glaucoma, so it is important to be well informed about their effects.

Therefore, the president of the Mexican Center for Low Mink recommends both regular check-ups and awareness of the need for attention and knowledge of the various factors that increase the risk of low vision.

In the case of having received a diagnosis of this condition, it is important to receive a multidisciplinary treatment and rehabilitation in order to "not only accept the condition, but also learn to be incorporated into daily activities for a good quality of life", says the specialist.
