Habits and factors that lead to infertility

In general, in our country it is thought that the main cause of infertility are health problems, particularly in women, who have the false belief that they are the majority with respect to men, according to a fertility survey carried out by Merck Sharp and Dohme Mexico (MSD) .

In this regard, according to the doctor Álvaro Santibañez Morales, Secretary of the Mexican Association of Reproductive Medicine (AMMR) It is very frequent that neither specialists nor couples consider that bad habits of life can actually be constituted as a cause of infertility.

Habits such as smoking, obesity, stress, alcoholism, frequent exposure to chemicals or pesticides, and even sexually transmitted infections (STIs), greatly affect the reproductive capacity of both women and men.

According to the MSD study, Mexican couples currently do not care so much about health problems or age for conception, since 8 out of 10 respondents said that income is the main requirement before procreating a child, followed by better stability as a couple

In women, the most common causes of infertility are due to problems in ovulation; for example, stop ovulating before the age of 40, thyroid problems; chronic diseases, such as some types of cancer, in which the ovaries can not produce ovules, diseases such as polycystic ovarian syndrome or Cushing's syndrome, to mention just a few.

Whereas in men, 75% of the causes of infertility are due to alterations in the semen, among the most common are: a low sperm count, little mobility, abnormal sperm (for example, with a different shape) or even total absence thereof.

Unfortunately, Álvaro Santibañez reveals, most couples come to seek help until the problem of conception is very evident, which usually happens in a period of less than 6 months.

In that sense, Julio Francisco de la Jara Díaz, President of the AMMR , explains that currently there are several techniques of assisted reproduction, which allows couples to conceive after just over a year of receiving the appropriate treatment for each case, for which it is necessary to approach the specialist (gynecologist) to determine the or the causes of infertility and the best solution, as well as to inform them accurately about your options.

Therefore, the AMMR and MSD they have come together to offer couples, through the website www.deseamoserpapas.mx, the information necessary to demystify fertility, as well as guidance on techniques and topics of infertility and assisted reproduction.
