Therefore, specialists from the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS) recommend, after 40 years of age, to go to the ophthalmologist to review at least once a year, since the timely detection of these diseases allows to delay the manifestation of the disease and the appearance of symptoms.

In this regard, the doctor Ernesto Díaz del Castillo , member of the Ophthalmology Division Headquarters of the Specialties Hospital of the Siglo XXI National Medical Center, indicated:

"There are no exercises to protect the eyes or improve vision , it is also essential that people go to the specialist, for review ophthalmologic , twice a year after the age of 50 and three times after the age of 60. "
 
According to Díaz del Castillo, this will allow to detect a problem in a timely manner: "The glaucoma , for example, is a pathology that usually has no symptoms; in the type of glaucoma more frequent, the eye pressure rises little by little, the patient does not feel anything, while it is injuring the optic nerve ; if it does not go periodically for revision, that nerve will be injured and is no longer recoverable. "

The health specialist said that among the most serious diseases in the eyes are the waterfall (loss of lens transparency), mainly in the population over 60 years of age; glaucoma (increased intraocular pressure that produces lesions in the optic nerve) and the Diabetic retinopathy (ocular injury due to the weakness of the capillaries, a consequence of the diabetes ).

He indicated that among the most frequent problems in the eyes , that affect in a mild or moderate way the view , are those of an irritative or allergic type due to contamination or factors such as dust, pollen or antigens in the atmosphere.

Díaz del Castillo reported that up to 30% of the population uses some optical correction for adequate vision, such as glasses , contact lenses or have some kind of corrective surgery .
