Fragile bones like glass

According to an investigation carried out by the World Health Organization, in Mexico there is a million people who do not know that they have or suffer from osteoporosis; But is it really that serious?

One in every 12 women will have a hip fracture due to this disease; in the case of men it will be one for every 20. These figures include data provided by the doctor Flora del Carmen Ojeda, doctor assigned to the Orthopedics service of the Hospital 20 de Noviembre of the ISSSTE.

One factor that makes the female and male population of the country vulnerable to osteoporosis is their vitamin D deficits, which is 67%. This may be due to various situations: bad habits and prolonged exposure to the sun.

In Mexico, and worldwide, the most recurrent fractures due to osteoporosis are those of the hip, spine and forearm; the first one having the most repercussions on the patient's health, since it can reduce his life up to 22 years.

Osteoporosis is a disease that is characterized by a decrease in the density and quality of bones, which causes them to become more fragile. However, how do you know that you have this condition?

A test called bone deintometry is enough to discover it, but if you do not have the financial resources to carry it out, WHO has an online tool that can help you discover the disease for free: www.shef.ac.uk/frax

Carmen Ojeda indicated, at the conference "Healthy bones, unbreakable moms", organized by laboratories MSD , that hip fractures due to osteoporosis have the same breast cancer mortality that is 2.5%.

The specialist recommends that to avoid fractures, women over 50 years of age consume 1200mg of calcium per day, between 800 and 1000 of international units of vitamin D.

Remember, the most important thing is your health. Prevent and take care!
