Exercises for diabetics

There is a lot of talk about benefits of the exercise in patients suffering from cardiovascular diseases; example, hypertension or heart attacks. However, what happens when the condition is diabetes?

The Spanish Foundation for the Heart and the Foundation for Diabetes recommend some actions that should be taken into account before starting an exercise routine if you suffer from diabetes:

1. Inject insulin into muscle groups that do not move during exercise.

2. Plan the exercise to do it regularly and at the same time each day, preferably during the first hours of the morning.

3. Adapt it to the schedule of meals and the action of insulin.

4. Avoid exercises in extreme heat or cold conditions and during periods of metabolic decontrol.

Among the exercises that a diabetic person can perform are cycling, swimming, jumping rope, walking and running. In this case, physical activities are recommended, mainly aerobic, since these favor peripheral blood circulation, improving the oxygenation and nutrition of all the cells of the body.

Some benefits of the exercise are the following:

1. Decrease glucose levels.
2. Increase caloric expenditure.
3. Help maintain weight.
4. Tones the muscles.

Both swimming and running or walking are low-impact exercises. It is recommended that each session have 10 to 20 minutes of stretching exercises and muscular strength, five minutes of aerobic warm-up and 15 to 40 minutes of exercise.

To enjoy the benefits of the exercise , diabetic patients, like the rest of the population should perform sports activities at least three times a week.

Remember, change your habits and take care of your health and that of your family.
