Encouraging result of new gel to prevent HIV

Guatemala, Sep 6 10 (CIMAC / Cerigua) .- A first test among women between 18 and 40 years of age, about the effectiveness of a new vaginal gel that could reduce the spread of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), achieved an effectiveness of 39%.

According to information from the Joint United Nations Program on HIV and AIDS (UNAIDS), although more experiments are needed, there is encouraging evidence on the possibility of having a new element that prevents the increase of AIDS in the world.

The agency announced that it will develop other studies next year, this time focusing on young women between 16 and 17 years of age, who are in a high vulnerability situation , especially in regions of Africa.

He added that it is not yet known if the gel reacts in the same way according to the age groups (by age), so the tests in this area should be strengthened.

The product must be applied 12 hours before a sexual intercourse and 12 hours later, which showed a 39% effectiveness ; the result generated many expectations, since it is the first time that a significant advance in the prevention issue has been achieved, says UNAIDS.

In some countries, 10% of adolescents carry the virus, so over the past 20 years, the UN has developed strategies to empower women through use of microbicides whose application can be controlled by them and not depend on the decisions of their partners to protect themselves from HIV.

In the world, most women have been infected by your own husbands , boyfriends or cohabitants, especially in contexts of violence based on gender or within the family, the organization points out.
