Do household chores relieve menopause symptoms?

For menopausal women who can not go to the gym, a higher level of routine physical activity during the day can help relieve sleep problems caused by hot flashes or night sweats, a small new study suggests.

Exercise improves the sleep of people in general, but above all that of menopausal women, as stated by the researchers of the center. Pittsburgh where the Health Study of the women of the country was carried out.

This new study included 27 white women and 25 black women, 54 to 63 years old, who suffered from hot flashes and night sweats. The women wrote diaries and brought devices that monitor sleep.

They also reported on their level of physical activity, including routine home tasks and care of others that required a light, moderate or vigorous effort, in addition to any sport or exercise that they will perform in their free time.

The researchers found that women with a higher level of activity said they woke up less often at night and slept better.

These benefits were largely associated with housework and caring for others, rather than with sports or exercise, the study authors said in a press release from the North American Menopause Society.

The positive effects of physical activity occurred mainly in white women who were not obese.

The study, led by Maya Lambiase and Rebecca Thurston , was published online recently in the magazine Menopause
