Cornea is the most powerful lens

The cornea , considered the most powerful lens, is one of the essential elements of eye , because thanks to its transparency and thinness, allows the passage of light and protects iris and to crystalline of external aggressions, with his tear film.

Ophthalmology specialists point out that it is the outermost layer of the eyeball and of a converging lens of 42 diopters of refractive power; optical function that is achieved if the transparency of the cornea . It consists of five layers that are:

  1. Epithelium
  2. Bowman's membrane
  3. The stroma
  4. The membrane of Descemet
  5. The endothelium

In addition, its regular shape helps to refract and transmit light to the inside of the eye, that is, it correctly focuses an image on the retina .

What damages the cornea?

There are three causes that can affect this important tissue of the human eye:

  1. Exogenous: Traumatisms, foreign bodies and infections
  2. Neighborhood: The corneal epithelium is continued with the conjunctiva; participates in conjunctival conditions.
  3. Endogenous: Because it is an avascular tissue, cornea it participates with greater intensity in immunological processes than in infectious ones.

In the great majority of superficial corneal injuries (foreign bodies), the foreign body stuck in the cornea must be extracted urgently, covering the eye for several days, to avoid scars or corneal walleye.

The process of corneal healing is very important, because it depends on the greater or lesser loss of transparency of this tissue .
