Consumption of alcohol in women

When women abuse alcohol consumption they are exposed to risks such as possible unwanted pregnancies, victimization or sexually transmitted diseases.

Even when women drink less than men, there is more risk of having problems due to our values and culture, where there is greater physical and psychological vulnerability.

In Mexico it is considered that women should not drink alcohol or should drink less than men, it can be said that culture protects women from abusing substances "(Women in the culture of drinking alcohol, risks and benefits, FISAC 1999, P.5).

In our culture, when a woman abuses alcohol consumption is seen as irresponsible, dishonest and even selfish, which does not happen in the case of men.

The doctor María Elena Medina Mora He believes that "when women present problems with alcohol consumption they are often rejected, experience more conflicts and often hide it, which makes early detection and intervention difficult.

According to National Survey of Additions 2011 , the high consumption of alcohol in women occurs in the Northwest of the country, including states such as Culiacán, Mazatlán and Tijuana, reaching an index of 22.9% of the total population surveyed, followed by the Federal District and the State of Mexico with 19.3%.

The consumption of alcohol in women worldwide has occurred mainly in urban populations, which has to do with the changes of roles and increase of economic resources, this varies depending on the socioeconomic and cultural factors of each region.
