Consuming coffee can cause infertility in women

For much, one of the greatest discoveries has been the coffee . Since time immemorial the great cultures of the world have had it among their favorite drinks . Even today, the important talks or the most emotional moments are accompanied by a cup of hot coffee.

Unfortunately, and despite having a good amount of benefits, this drink can be harmful for those women who have plans to be mothers. This discovery is not something new, this conclusion had already been reached before, but it is up to now that one can speak with certainty of the causes of such risk .

According to scientist of the University of Nevada School of Medicine , the caffeine reduces the muscular activity of the fallopian tubes, those in charge of transporting ovules since the ovaries to the uterus . This research was carried out in mice, but scientists believe that this could explain why caffeinated beverages reduce the chances of pregnancy in women, as studies have shown.

Essential mechanism

To achieve pregnancy, human eggs need to travel from the ovaries until the uterus . And although this process is essential for reproduction, until now scientists have not been able to understand clearly how ovules are mobilized through the Fallopian tube or oviducts .

The widespread belief is that small, microscopic-looking protrusions, called cilia, located in the lining of the oviducts, help ovules float assisted by muscular contractions on the inner walls of the tubes.

These contractions are carried out with the help of specialized cells, called pacemaker cells, on the walls of the tubes. The cells are responsible for coordinating muscle contractions so that when they are "at rest", the ovules can not move through the tubes. The scientists, who publish the study in British Journal of Pharmacology (British Journal of Pharmacology), discovered that caffeine stopped the function of pacemaker cells in the wall of the oviduct of mice.

Explanation "interesting"

The teacher Sean Ward , director of the study for BBC World "This gives us an interesting explanation of why women who tend to consume high levels of caffeine often have more problems conceiving than women who do not."

The results, says the researcher, also help to better understand how the movement of ovules to him uterus and how are the mechanisms that cause certain diseases of the female reproductive apparatus.

"A better understanding of the functioning of Fallopian tube will help doctors deal more successfully with pelvic inflammation and sexually transmitted infections. It could also increase our understanding of what causes an ectopic pregnancy, an extremely painful and potentially lethal disorder in which the embryo gets stuck in one of the fallopian tubes and begins to develop there, "he adds. Ward .

Caffeine has not only been associated with greater problems getting pregnant. A study published in 2008 in the British Medical Journal found that pregnant women who consume more than two cups of coffee or four cups of tea per day, are more likely to have their babies born with a lower than normal weight.

Low birth weight children are more likely to suffer Heart problems and diseases like diabetes.
The recommendation of the experts is that pregnant women reduce their caffeine consumption to less than two cups a day and that women who are planning to get pregnant avoid consuming these drinks.
