COFEPRIS seizes 14 million cigars from Vietnam

At World No Tobacco Day , the federal government, in joint action with the Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risks (COFEPRIS) and the Service tax administration (SAT), detected the attempt to import 739 thousand packs of cigarettes from Vietnam, which do not comply with current health regulations.

The packages insured by the Customs of Mexico, arrived at the country with sanitary images and legends (pictograms) not authorized and equivalent to 21.2 tons, with an estimated value in the market of approximately 11 million pesos.

COFEPRIS, in collaboration with the SAT, verified the merchandise and determined that it does not comply with health regulations, so that allowing it to enter the country would have represented a risk to the health of smokers. According to the first investigations, the brands of embargoed tobacco products are: Gold Seal Capital Y D & J Royal . For fiscal reasons, the investigation reserves the identity of the importer.

At the request of the SAT, COFEPRIS verified the conditions established in the Prior Sanitary Import Permits and notified that the embargoed tobacco products do not comply with the provisions of Article 7 of the "Agreement by which the provisions for the formulation are made known. , approval, application, use and incorporation of legends, images, pictograms, health messages and information that should be included in all packets of tobacco products and in all packaging and external labeling thereof ", published in the Official Gazette of the Federation on December 24, 2009.

That is, the packs of Vietnam bring pictograms and health messages different from those authorized and expired, so the sanitary authority notified the SAT that they do not comply with the legal provisions and could be a risk to the health of the potential consumers.

COFEPRIS and the SAT reiterate that they will continue to combat the illicit trade in tobacco products in all the country's customs and points of sale.
