COFEPRIS publishes list of antibiotics subject to medical prescription

The Federal Commission for Protection against Sanitary Risks (COFEPRIS) reports that it has published on its Internet portal (www.cofepris.gob.mx ) the list of antibiotics that for the first time in Mexico, and with the purpose of avoiding risks to the health of the population, will be subject to the presentation of the medical prescription as of August 25.

The owner of the COFEPRIS , Miguel Ángel Toscano Velasco, affirmed that the list of antibiotics was uploaded to the Internet so that citizens and the pharmaceutical industry can consult it and know which medicines will be marketed exclusively with a prescription.

The federal official explained that in compliance with the third article of the Agreement, which determines the guidelines to which the sale and dispensing of antibiotics will be subject, published in the Official Journal of the Federation On May 27, the list of antibiotics has been published with health registration number, generic name, form of presentation, commercial name and laboratory that produces them. It will be updated with the observations that users could make.

The commissioner Toscano Velasco informed that there are more than 2 thousand health records of antibiotics that COFEPRIS has in its database and will require a medical prescription to be acquired in the pharmacies of the country. In turn, the Commissioner of Health Operation, Lucio Galileo Lastra Marín, explained that the list of antibiotics and antimicrobials subject to control are those considered within section IV of Article 226 of the General Health Law.

He indicated that the Internet portal presents the list of antibiotics in their different pharmaceutical forms: oral (tablets, capsules, tablet, suspension, oral solution, granules, implants, troches) and parenteral (injectable intravenous and intramuscular solution).

Commissioner Lastra finally clarified that this list excludes cutaneous, ophthalmic, nasal and otic presentations, which are a minimal part of the total universe, since this type of antibiotics does not represent major risks to the health of consumers.
