Citizen Observatory of Maternal Mortality is born

On March 3, 2011, the Citizen Observatory of Maternal Mortality (OMM) was presented, promoted by the Promoting Committee for a Safe Motherhood in Mexico (CPMSR), headed by Graciela Freyermuth Enciso , who will be technical secretary of the Observatory.

The WMO, composed of Civil Society Organizations (CSO), academic, governmental and international cooperation institutions, will aim to monitor the actions that the State undertakes to abate the maternal death with a view to 2015 and demand accountability.

In a press conference, Graciela Freyermuth, technical secretary of the CPMSR, pointed out that public policies and the increase in the budget are necessary to eradicate health problem However, it is not enough, that is why the Observatory was created, which was officially presented, since it has 2 years working .

In this regard, he informed that they will closely monitor the affiliation strategy "Healthy Pregnancy" , released in 2008 and which aims to provide timely access to the services of health to women during motherhood.

"Although it is still a very young program, the Observatory will follow it closely as the Popular Insurance actions in the matter must be reinforced," said the former counselor of the National Council for the Evaluation of Social Development Policy and the Measurement of Poverty from 2006 to 2009.

In 2009 , were registered in the country thousand 207 maternal deaths , which represents a maternal mortality ratio of 62.2. Of the deceased, 13.8% were under 19 years old .

"400 of them did not have social security or a health protection system. 160 died in their homes, and 400 were beneficiaries of the Popular insurance ", Said the researcher of the Center for Research and Higher Studies in Social Anthropology (CIESAS).

The Undersecretary of Prevention and Promotion of Health, of the Ministry of Health, Mauricio Hernández Ávila , who was present at the launch of the Observatory, reported that according to the preliminary figures of the Ss, in 2010 they died 953 women for complications related to pregnancy which represents a maternal mortality ratio of 49.5.

Graciela Freyermuth reported that the Observatory will have a web page as a means of interaction with civil society, which, he said, is under construction.
