Cell phones as a tool for health care

The Ministry of Health began this October 18, 2010, the permanent campaign of vaccination through messages on mobile , by means of which parents and guardians of children will be invited to attend the health units at any time of the year to immunize their children under five years of age and especially those under one year of age; on completing two, four, six, 12 and 18 months .

This strategy is the result of a important alliance between the National Center for Childhood and Adolescent Health (CENSIA), and companies Johnson & Johnson and Procter & Gamble, which have made a valuable contribution to the achievement of this initiative. It is the first time that the government uses an innovative communication strategy, achieving a one-to-one relationship with the population.

This campaign wants all parents who have children under five years of age to send a text message with the following information: HEALTH (space) the date of birth of your child (dd-mm-yyyy) to 33666 , (Example: HEALTH 23092010) and immediately you will receive a health guide With a vaccination approach, they will receive text messages later, reminding them of the time they should take their children to be vaccinated, according to the date of their birth.

The main objective is to reach rates above 95% in complete vaccination schemes in children under one year.

This is how parents who enter the data of their children will receive a message reminding them of the two, four, six, 12 and 18 months, which should go to their nearest health unit to vaccinate their children.

The aim is for the population to become aware of the importance of taking children to immunize in time to avoid diseases, which have serious consequences and can even cause death. It is important to remember that vaccines are safe and free.

In addition, from the information of the permanent vaccination campaign, other messages will be implemented such as the prevention, detection and management of the diarrheal disease and respiratory infections, as well as nutrition, cancer and early stimulation, among others.

You can register up to three babies per cell. For users who have problems in downloading the application, there is the helpline: 01 800 388 77 00 .

In our country there are 80 million mobile telephone lines and it is estimated that approximately six million people surf constantly through the telephone, which translates into an excellent means of dissemination to inform about this permanent vaccination campaign.
