What is the use of the voice? Considered as the oldest and most natural instrument with which music can be made; the voice is the main tool of communication. It is a complex function involving organs such as the larynx and the lungs.

Through it, thoughts, feelings, moods and neurological, respiratory and digestive disorders are expressed. Bad practices such as shouting, eating irritable foods, smoking or drinking alcohol, and lack of vocal hygiene can affect you until you get sick.

Small changes in the voice tell us that something is happening in the body, said the doctor Rosa Eugenia Chávez Calderón, director of the Center for Phoniatrics and Audiology.

The specialist explained that it is important that the population is aware of the use of the voice and is aware that it can be hurt and lost, depending on the cause for which it has been damaged.

In turn, he said, it is possible to educate the voice according to what we want to communicate. This is achieved by making the timbre more pleasant, imperative or strong, according to what you want to communicate.

"The vocal image is personal and is given by the type of vocal cords we have, therefore, a teacher, a leader or a singer, through his voice, communicate different things."

The speech therapist pointed out that as we grow, vocal cords and larynx also do so and our tone changes (mutation of the voice). Even, he clarified, older adults continue to show modifications as their cartilage and muscles weaken and biochemical changes occur in muscle mass that lead to weakening of the voice.

Celebration in UNIVERSUM

In order to create awareness of your care, the next World Voice Day will be celebrated on April 16 whose motto is Communicate with your voice. This initiative is supported by the World Health Organization , the World Voice Consortium and the International Federation of Otolaryngology Societies .

Within the framework of this celebration, the specialist will dictate the conference The voice: instrument of communication in UNIVERSUM, Museum of Sciences of the UNAM .

In addition, Mexico will join the world with the presentations of the Preparatory Choir of Children and Youth Singers of the National School of Music of the UNAM and the University Philharmonic Choir .

Dr. Chávez Calderón commented that similar concerts will be held in different parts of the world at 7:30 p.m., local time in each country, in order to show the manifestation of the artistic voice at its maximum expression, that is, singing.
