Alcohol is a legal drug and well accepted within society, since it is considered a mechanism to socialize, but what happens when it becomes a disease? Even worse, how does it affect the relationship?
Addictions, such as alcohol, cigarettes and even work, have a negative impact on the couple's relationship. It not only becomes a tool of personal destruction but also for others. The vast majority of couples of alcoholics try, by all means, that the partner decreases the consumption of this legal drug , without realizing that they are generating a codependence towards the patient.
The relationship as a couple begins to turn on certain thoughts: will it arrive taken ?, why does it drink ?, do you love me?
Each meeting becomes a matter of insecurity and fear, since it is unknown how the other will act, how much will be taken and if his response to be controlled will be aggressive. The couple's relationship is transformed into something stressful and depressing.
However, there are some actions that can be done to prevent the patient from destroying the life of the couple and therefore the relationship:
1. Recognize that there is a problem. The addict's partner must understand that their partner has a problem of addiction to alcohol.
2. Accept that it will never change for love. The person will not stop drinking because of promises or because the other asks for it.
3. Both need specialized support. They are partners and in this problem both are affected.
4. You are not guilty. The patient will always try to place the responsibility on the other of his problem.
5. Limits. Sometimes the best thing is to set limits, to separate for a while does not hurt, it may help the situation.
Alcohol is a drug lega l, but it does not stop being a drug. A substance that harms and pity, not only the consumer but also his partner and family. Take care and love yourself.
