Breath test detects cancer

The Colorectal cancer It is the second cause of death in Mexico and the third worldwide, in regard to this disease, points out the Mexican Association of Oncology . Situation that causes the search of mechanisms that allow its early detection and counteract its effects on patients.

In an essay conducted in a Hospital of Bar i, in southern Italy, the researcher Donato F. Altomare He discovered that some elements in the breath can help specialists detect cancer.

This disease causes disorders in the metabolism, which alters volatile organic compounds (CVO) present in our breath. In the case of patients with Colorectal cancer the pattern is the same, but different from that of healthy people.

The volatile organic compounds of a cancer patient suffer from mutations within their structure, which is mainly composed of benzene, alkanes and derivatives. CVOs are also related to other types of cancer: lung, breast, melanoma and carcinoma.

The research, published by British Journal of Surgery , consisted in comparing the breath of 37 cancer patients with 41 others who apparently did not have the result: 76% accuracy in the detection of the Colorectal cancer.

These components can also be found in other tests, but the breath test has a superior quality: it is not invasive.

The results of this research are encouraging; however, the search for more effective methods continues.
