Beware of your breath!

A simple breath test could reveal if a person has lung cancer of initial stage, according to a recent study.

The researchers evaluated the exhaled breath of people with lung lesions suspicious that were detected in CT scans. Breath was evaluated for the levels of four cancer-specific substances, known as "carbonyls."

The samples of breath were analyzed using a special device developed in the University of Louisville.

Having high levels of three of the four carbonyls predicted the lung cancer in 95% of patients, while having normal levels of these substances predicted a non-cancerous tumor in 80% of patients, the researchers found.

Elevated levels of carbonyls returned to normal after lung cancer patients had surgeries to remove the Cancer , according to the study, which will be presented on Tuesday at the annual meeting of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons in Orlando, Florida.

"Instead of referring patients to invasive biopsies when suspicious masses are identified in the lungs, our study suggests that exhaled breath could identify which patients" could be referred for a surgery immediate, the study author said in a press release from the company, Dr. Michael Bousamra, of the University of Louisville.

This method offers something new, he said, which includes "the simplicity of sample collection and comfort for the patient. "

The data and conclusions of the research presented at medical meetings should be considered preliminary until they are published in a peer-reviewed journal.
