Asthma grows 30% in winter

The asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease of the respiratory tract , which affects more than 5% of the population and is among the top 10 causes of health services utilization, in accordance with Margarita Fernández Vega , pulmonologist of the National Institute of Respiratory Diseases (INER)

During the winter season, cases of asthmatic crisis they increase up to 30% compared to other times of the year, so the specialist recommended taking preventive measures such as avoiding sudden changes in temperature, dressing warmly, covering the nose and mouth, as well as getting vaccinated against influenza .

Fernández Vega points out that some hereditary factors can influence the development of asthma, in addition to the exposure of triggers such as pollen, animal hair, dust and pollution, among others.

Among the main symptoms of the disease are:

  1. Cough (especially at night)
  2. Shortness of breath
  3. Whistles generated by the inflammation of the bronchi
  4. Sensation of tightness in the chest
  5. Phlegms

The specialist assures that the asthma It can be controlled with inhaled medications and bronchodilators. "80% of asthmatic patients can achieve adequate control of their disease , which translates into a better quality of life, "he said.

He clarified that it is a myth that asthmatics are limited to perform certain activities , because with good medical control they can have a normal life, even perform some sport .
