Anti-inflammatories could affect schizophrenia

Scientists of the National School of Biological Sciences (ENCB) of the National Polytechnic Institute (IPN), study in animal models if the use of Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs , during the neonatal stage, influences the development of schizophrenia throughout life.

Schizophrenia is a fundamental disorder of the personality and one distortion of thought , characterized by delirious ideas that can be extravagant, alterations in perception, stress, anxiety and depressive symptoms. To date, its origin is unknown.

The research group headed by Dr. Rocío Ortiz Butrón, direct their efforts to the study of the alteration of neurotransmitters related to molecular and behavioral changes.

Ortiz Butrón explained that as part of the study they have evaluated 3 non-steroidal anti-inflammatories: ketorolac , diclofenac and indomethacin ; the prescription of the latter is indicated to avoid the loss of the product when there is a threat of abortion. "In many cases that purpose is achieved, but it is suspected that one of its side effects is the development of schizophrenia," he said.

Based on the experiments carried out, the indomethacin increases the concentration of kinuric acid , which alters the levels of glutamate, which is a neurotransmitter (communication molecule between neurons) that intervenes in virtually all circuits of the central nervous system.

This alteration produces hyperfunctionality of the dopaminergic system (regulates certain types of behavior and establishes the production of dopamine that is responsible for maintaining thoughts and perceptions in accordance with reality), also produces disorders in the serotoninergic system (related to the regulation of mood, vital tone, adaptability and pattern of socialization ).

He commented that these behaviors reflect the alteration of the neurotransmitters already described above. "Animals can not express if they have hallucinations or delusions , but it is possible to detect important changes in behavior that manifest themselves in hyperactivity and isolation (depression). "

Polytechnic scientists called on the population in general to avoid self-medication, since it is very common to use non-steroidal anti-inflammatories without medical prescription, but especially in women pregnant that they must be careful with the use of any kind of drug and especially indomethacin, which has a negative influence on the central nervous system of the future baby and will have repercussions on his future life.
