Anorexia, impacts on fertility

Nowadays, we believe that being thin or with an adequate physical image is considered as social success or corporal beauty, which has generated eating disorders, among which anorexia is found.

Although this disease can start at puberty, it can occur at any time of life.

The singer and actress Anahí suffered during her adolescence and managed to leave her with the support of her family and a team of multidisciplinary specialists. However, although she has wanted to get pregnant, she has not achieved it.

According to a study carried out by researchers from King's College and University College (London), women with a history of eating disorders such as anorexia or bulimia have more fertility problems than women without this history.

About 40% of the female fertility problems of women who have suffered from eating disorders are divided into amenorrhea, oligomenorrhea and anovulation related to hormonal disorders, menstrual irregularities and emotional difficulties. A balanced and complete diet, which is reflected in a healthy body weight, is very influential on fertility. Body weight, mainly the body fat content, hormonally and metabolically affects different aspects of health in general and reproduction in particular, "says Abigail Easte, author of the study.

Some of the signs and symptoms of patients with anorexia are the following:

  • The feeling of hungry it degenerates
  • They avoid social gatherings where food is involved
  • They concentrate excessively on an exercise regimen
  • They have a terrible fear of gaining weight or being fat
  • They are obsessed with diet and weight loss
  • They refuse to maintain the minimum normal body weight for their age and height
  • They present a dramatic loss of weight
  • They base their self-esteem on weight and body image
  • They avoid eating
  • Even when they are very thin, the perception of oneself is of an overweight person
  • They weigh themselves several times a day and focus on small variations in their weight

A severe case of this eating disorder can cause the death of the patient; Even a less serious case may require hospitalization. A common method of treatment is psychotherapy. This can include a significant amount of time and financial commitment, but it is well worth the sacrifice.

Other methods are cognitive-behavioral therapy, group therapy, interpersonal psychotherapy, family therapy, medication, and even self-help programs.

If you notice any sign that they are presenting characteristics of anorexia, it is important to ask for professional help. Many people can be cured just by following a healthy diet and the support of the family. It's never too late to ask for help!
