Amblyopia causes blurred vision

In accordance with National Institute of the Eye (NEI, for its acronym in English), the amblyopia it is the loss of an eye's ability to observe details and is the most common cause of visual impairment in childhood, affecting 3 out of every 100 children; usually, it continues in adolescence and in adulthood.

The condition, also known as lazy eye , appears when the vision of one of the eyes decreases because the nerve path of the eye to the brain it does not develop correctly, which generates blurry images. Among its most common symptoms are:

  1. Eyes that turn in or out
  2. Inability to judge depth correctly
  3. Poor vision

The amblyopia is triggered by any physical condition that affects the development of normal vision, such as squint (an imbalance in the position of the eyes), the myopia , the farsightedness , astigmatism or waterfalls ; however, there is often a family history of this condition.

The treatments are effective when they start at a young age and there are two types:

  1. Atropine: It is a medicine in the form of drops, which clouds the sight of the healthy eye, to force the child to use the one that has amblyopia .
  2. Patch: By covering the healthy eye of the child for several weeks or months, the vision of the one with the defect is stimulated.

The specialists point out that it is detected with a complete examination of the eyes, so no special studies are needed.

Patients who receive treatment before the age of five recover their vision almost 100%.
