Birth defects are a problem of public health perinatal, affecting the health of theborn in different degrees; from disability, to death.
According to figures from the National Center for Gender Equity and Reproductive Health, in Mexico, annually, almost 100 thousand newborns are risk to present a defect at birth or suffer some of its consequences.
The Ministry of Health performs actions that prevent and take care of defects at birth. Among the actions carried out include:
- Neonatal resuscitation: so that the neonates are treated at birth, by a health specialist. In 2004, there were more than 40 thousand doctors trained in neonatal cardiopulmonary resuscitation techniques.
- Neonatal screening: through this study, tests are carried out to discover serious diseases in apparently healthy newborns.
- Folic acid: Folic acid in future mothers prevents neural tube defects. In 2004, the National Center for Gender Equity and Reproductive Health of Mexico estimated that there were around 23 thousand newborns per year in the country, with some neural tube defect.
- Creation of Integral Services for Prevention and Attention of the Disability (SINDIS): the purpose of these centers is that all newborns with defects at birth have the attention of specialized multidisciplinary teams, allowing them access to therapeutic and technological advances .
