AA warning for increased alcoholism in women

Mexico, D.F (Gladis Torres Ruiz / CIMAC) .- Although in recent years the alcoholism among Mexicans has increased, also the number of those who decide to seek help to attack the disease is increasing, currently, they constitute about 50% of the members of the group of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) 24 hours free services, Mexico section, Countess matrix .

In a press conference, Guillermo L. founding member of the 24-hour international movement of AA in Mexico said that years ago, at the beginning of the movement, due to social prejudices andmachismo , women did not arrive at this kind of places.

At present in most of the 24-hour registered groups that are close to 400, there is a large number of women in recovery of all ages.

He clarified that this does not mean that the macho culture or the society that stigmatizes drinking women has changed, but that it is the women themselves who have decided to recover their dignity and the life lost with that disease. According to the National Survey of Addictions (ENA) 2008, little more than four million Mexicans presents abuse or dependence on alcohol, of these patients, 670 thousand 117 are women.

As for the "usual" consumption, that is to say, not dependent, the ENA warns that even though it is more frequent among men in a ratio of 5.8 for each woman. This way of drinking is increasing, especially among teenagers.

In the facilities of the group countess, the founder of the group Virgilio A, reported that alcohol consumption among Mexican youth is increasing, both in women and men who no longer only come with alcohol problems, but also with drug addiction problems.

 

Chronic and incurable disease
